Baseball goes 2-1 over stretch

The last weekend for the month of January has been a very busy one as the Cerritos College baseball team went 2-1 over the stretch.

The Falcons began on Friday hosting Glendale CC and that game definitely didn’t go the Falcons way.

After a promising start through the first three innings, the Falcons allowed Glendale to slowly climb back in to the ball game and eventually win it, 12-6.

Cerritos got a hot streak going with some good hitting from designated hitter George Sanchez and catcher David Neff.

Sanchez hit the ball deep in to center field followed by a few RBI hits from Neff and shortstop Max McEleney.

Pitching became the main concern for the Falcons after pitcher Tony Peraza left the game and Glendale began to capitalize on Cerritos defensive mistakes.

As a result, the Falcons made a few pitching substitutions throughout the game looking for answers but none were found and assistant coach Jack Brooks said that although the pitching did struggle for the team, a few of the pitchers are returners from last season and do know better.

Brooks also stated that with more practice and game experience as the season progresses, the Falcons will show much improvement down the line.

Against Rio Hondo, plate discipline was the definite key to victory as Cerritos made a slow comeback thanks to give away pitches from the Roadrunners.

The Falcons’ pitching still struggled a bit, but the team defined what it is to be a unit as they dug themselves out of a deep whole with hitting, good base running and thrown walks.

It looked as if Cerritos would lose its second game in a row being down 7-2 but it managed to tie the score up in the seventh inning with an RBI hit by freshman C/1B Jacob Eaton and Lemuel Jackson with the bases loaded to take the lead.

The Roadrunners managed to tie the game back up at 8-8 but the Falcons took the game over with four consecutive hits and a few game winning RBI hits from McEleney and Paul Hayes.

Cerritos finished the game and won it 15-7.

The Falcons finally found their pitching answer in George Sanchez who proves to be a good all around ball player.

Hosting College of Canyons, the Falcons won this game convincingly, 7-2.

Sanchez pitched the majority of the game and deservingly so with solid throwing, giving Cerritos’ defensive coverage opportunities to make outs.

Sanchez clearly stated that if the team play stays consistent the way it did against the Cougars, it can make a run at a conference title and state as well.

Clutch hitting was also a key factor in the Falcons win, with an RBI triple from Hayes in the fourth inning to give them a 5-1 margin.

Neff also added an RBI the very next inning to extend their lead.

When Sanchez exited the ball game, the defense of Cerritos stayed disciplined and focused to insure that no comeback would be made by the Cougars.

However, there was a slight scare in the fifth inning when the second base umpire was hit in his left ankle by a line drive and the Cougars batter was still thrown out at first base.

College of Canyons never made any significant runs in the game and handed the Falcons a win.
