Women’s swimming goes undefeated

Womens+swimming+goes+undefeated

Undefeated in conference play and old records being broken by talented swimmers describes the women’s swimming team and its succesful season.

The Cerritos College women’s swimming team has been used to winning this whole year.

Falling short of a championship after being in third place last year would be disappointing.

The Falcons are 6-0 in conference play easily defeating their opponents by at least 50 points or more.

Coach Sergio Macias, who is now in his fourth year coaching for Cerritos, thinks his team has a great chance of winning the state championship this year.

“I’ve been pleased with performances at practice and competition, it is a reflection of the hard work we put in and the best part is we’re having fun,” Macias said about the current season.

Freshmen Natalie Peng and Jenel Lopez have been stand-out swimmers this season and continue to carry the Falcons to state.

Peng is one reason why women’s swimming has been successful this season.

“We expect to win conference this year. We have a lot of fast women and everyone puts in points which makes us reliable toward each other,” Peng said about the team.

In addition, Peng was named the state’s Athlete of the Month for February due to her first three successful meets leading to breaking six swimming records.

Lopez has also been another positive swimmer this year for Cerritos and has yet to lose in a meet this year.

“What’s really important is that we continue to go for the best times in our meets and going hard in every workout leading to the championship,” Lopez said about the effort of the team.

Lopez also owns six school records in the the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle.

With the second half of the season under way, Macias thinks the team can be even more impressive.

“Trying to break as many records as we can and two or three women having a chance to win state championships in personal events is still a possibility,” Macias said about the rest of the season.
