Cerritos hosts winning Bellflower High game

Students from Bellflower High School and Bellflower Middle School were excited to see the faculty members play against Power 106 DJs at Bellflower High on March 26.

The Bellflower faculty won the game, 71-63.
However, the event was more than just the high school faculty members playing against radio DJs, it a fundraiser for G.E.A.R. program, according to Shirley Arceo, coordinator of school relations.
“Cerritos College has a partnership with Bellflower High School through G.E.A.R. The program helps prepare the students for college,” shared Hector Vasquez, Bellflower High assistant principal. “We are trying to gather more funding to get more programs available to students.”
There to help from Cerritos were Arceo, peer counselors from Cerritos and Cerritos men’s basketball head coach Jesse Teplitzky as score keeper.
“Shirley called and needed help to organize this event. I think it’s a great that Cerritos puts an effort for programs like this,” Teplitzky shared.
Promoters such as Inferno, Nez Nice and Cerritos’ own Mondo Fresko were there to entertain the audience.
They were giving away posters, shirts, skateboards and a check for $1,000.
“We are just giving away to the community. We do things like this Tuesday and Thursday. The tickets sales go back to the school. We don’t keep the money. We just want to bring a smile to the students,” Nice said.
As an added bonus for the students, Power 106 brought New Boyz to perform their single, “You’re a Jerk,” during halftime.
Peer counselors and security guards had to hold the audience back from getting too close.
“We are here to convince kids to stay at school and have fun. You got to do what you got to do to follow your dream. It’s hard work but that’s what we did,” Legacy of New Boyz stated.
The students overall loved the event.
“I came for Power 106. I’m glad it’s for a good cause though. I want to go to college in the future,” said Ernesto Ordonez, student from Bellflower Middle School.
