Baseball wins award, makes playoffs

The Cerritos College Athletic Program has experienced some recent success this school year, and the Cerritos College baseball team would be no different as it makes the playoffs and players collect individual achievements.

Joe Terry, freshman second baseman and designated hitter, has been awarded the SCC Player of the Year and named an All Star.

When the team had its early struggles, Terry seemed to be a young leader, making crucial points on improvement such as more team unity and finishing out ball games.

Assistant coach Jack Brooks stated that once the young pitching staff, as well as the rest of the team, got its rhythm and game experience, the wins will come, and they have.

The Falcons also had other award winners such as first teamers’ pitcher George Sanchez and Chris Villalobos who had that four-hit shutout in late March.

Outfielder David Neff, who recorded 46 hits this season, which was one hit shy of the Falcon record of 47, also made the first team all-conference team.

Terry, who made the All Star team as a designated hitter, led the team in RBI hits with 34 which were also just shy of a school record with 39.

He also had an impressive batting average of .417, recorded 10 triples, and ran for eight stolen bases.

The Falcons had a team full of individual accolade winners and it will surely need that maturity shown this season as well and the consistency.

Even the coach’s son, third baseman Brian Gaylord, made the conference second team along with outfielder Jake Mayoral.

Shortstop Max McEleney, catcher Paul Hayes and designated hitter Jacob Eaton made the conference honorable mention.

Cerritos may have showed its youth early in the season, but has made major improvements and hopes to show its game experience and discipline at both sides of the ball in its upcoming playoff game at Mt. Sac Jacinto College.
