Women’s basketball defeats El Camino College behind hot three-point shooting

It was raining three pointers in the Falcon Gymnasium on Wednesday night, as sophomore Marissa Rendon and the rest of the Cerritos College women’s basketball squad drained a total of 10 baskets from beyond the arc to secure a 67-53 victory over El Camino College.

Sophomore Angela Pena led the team with 16 points, helping the team to victory by 14 points.

Contributing to the win was having only 13 turnovers compared to its average of 18.1 per game.

It also had a whopping 43 rebounds overall, with 20 of them coming offensively.

Cerritos College had multiple large leads throughout the game, at one point being ahead 21 before finally closing out ahead 14, taking the win and putting its season record to 13-10.

Rendon, who is a reigning first team All-South Coast Conference selection, had an impressive performance, leading with 8 assists and finishing with 13 points.

“My performance was good but there is always room for improvement,” Rendon said.

“I find it challenging sometimes to stay composed. I get frustrated a lot but I try to keep calm and believe in my teammates.”

One thing we will be focusing on in practice will be executing better, good play execution goes a long way.”

Coach Karen Welliver felt the team did pretty well in the game and thought the players saw each other well. Rebounding and post defense are going to be the main focus for the team to work on.

“The next team we will play have a good big and a quick guard… we need to work on our defense for the next game,” Coach Welliver said, referring to Los Angeles Southwest College.

Samira Fields, who was named All-Moore League when she was a senior in high school and averaging 12 points a game, is working on always improving.

“I think I did well. I could have definitely played better post defense, but overall I think I did well and got some good stops and rebounds for my team.”

One thing I would like to work on and improve is talking more on the court. I tend to get shy.”

The next home game will be held on Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. against Pasadena City College right before the Falcons head into the Southern California Regionals on Feb. 27.
