Track and Field prepares for Cerritos Invitational

The Cerritos College track and field team is looking forward to an exciting season as it hosts its invitational Feb. 15 and Feb 16.

Head coach Chris Richardson feels confident that both the men’s and women’s teams will turn out a fantastic season.

Natalie Lebarduzzi and George Robinson, members of the team, expect to have a good race, both as a team and as individuals.

“We are going to be focusing on competition preparation and getting into a good routine,” said Richardson.

“Mainly focusing on getting into a competitive mindset for the next meet.”

The team this year is very diverse in events and the throwers are the more seasoned members of the team.

This season the team is made of 90 percent freshman, it looks to be an interesting season with a lot of new talent.

“This last meeting against Mt. San Antonio College was for the team to get the cob webs off and get use to competition. I felt the team performed really well and I was really proud of everyone.

“Over all, demeanor and team spirit really solidified our team’s performance,” Richardson continued.

“The mental approach to the competition is one of the areas for improving this year.”

Lenarduzzi and Robinson both find Mt. San Antonio College to be one of their strong competitors.

They both think that it is an advantage to be competing at their home turf.

“It gives us more of a boost to represent the school well and to do well because it is our home turf,” said Lenarduzzi.

Robinson is not looking back at his past performance but he is only focusing on the invitational this weekend.

“We feel it doesn’t really affect us because we just treat it as a practice meet for now until the time matters.”

A key element the coach is working on is trying to get the freshmen to become more competitive and to have them carry over everything they do in practice to the upcoming invitational.

Both track and field teams started the season at the Mt. San Antonio College Opener.

As for the men’s track and field, sophomore Dionbrea Norris won the long jump with a distance of 6.80 meters. Adam Aguirre, freshman, came in second place in the high jump.

For the women’s, sophomore Tuki Sauvao won the discus and javelin and came in 2nd place for her toss of 11.90 meters. Alexis Dalton, freshman, won the long jump at 5.15 meters.
