Women’s and men’s tennis team’s end regular season on win streaks

Cerritos College’s women’s and men’s tennis team’s enter the playoffs both as No. 1 seeds, after strong regular seasons.

The women’s tennis team capped off the 2017-18 regular season with 19 straight victories, in rout to a 21-1 overall record (6-0 division play).

While the men’s team went on with eight straight wins to close out the regular season, while going 24-2 (9-0 conference)

The women’s team came off of a season where the squad went 10-6, however, the team experienced newfound success at the helms of rookie head coach Quinn Caldaron.

Caldaron took over for previous head coach Alvin Kim, just days before the start of the season.

Although the coaching position was a quick turnaround, Caldaron inherited two hungry teams

Sophomore Petra Such, of Hungary, confirmed that when she said one of the team’s goals this season was to go undefeated.

“I’m sad about that one [loss] actually, that one was a university.”

Such continued, “We are kinda sad that there is that one little loss, but we are really happy about 21 [wins].

The women’s team topped 20 wins for the second time since the 2012-13 season.

The men’s team is coming off of a productive 27-2 season last year.

Freshman Kent Hunter has been having a standout rookie year heading into the playoffs, he’s the only player, including out of the pool of women’s players to go undefeated in their singles matches, as he went 19-0.

“It makes me feel good about myself that I can perform at this level for the entirety of the season,” Hunter said.

Another one of the team’s best players is Victor Castro.

Teammate Kwangeun Lee said Castro is “world class.”

He continued, “I don’t know why he’s here at a Junior College to be honest, the man’s a beast.”

Hunter and Castro were the only men’s tandum to go undefeated in doubles games

Lee stated, “These guys are some of the best guys here—much better than last year.”

In 2016 women’s tennis won its first CCCAA State Dual Team Championship in school history defeating De Anza College.

The 2018 crew seeks to have similar success in the playoffs.

“…Everyone is working really hard and…dedicated, we have one goal all together—to win the state championship,” Such commented.

Head Coach Quinn Caldaron, talked about his outlook referring to the women’s team, “I think the only way we get upset is if we get a little complacent and assume we’re going to win, so to keep the girls motivated to keep pushing is going to be my biggest job.”

Both the men’s and women’s tennis team’s are slated to play their next game in the Southern California Regional – Team Playoffs on April 17 at 2 p.m., the men’s team will take on College of the Desert and the women’s team will face Irvine Valley College.
