The Cerritos Falcons played against the College of the Canyons Cougars for their opening game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on May 4, resulting in a 12-4 loss.

The Falcons let the game get away from them in the later innings leading to a defeat in just six innings to the Cougars.

Head coach Kodee Murray commented on how she expects her falcons to respond knowing they are down in the series 1-0.

She said, “We have to get back and let the game come to us instead of going out there trying to grab, just slow everything down and go at it and we will be alright.”

Murray was very shocked about the amount of errors that the Falcons had during the game, she expects all of that to be better by the next game.

The game started off slow, as there were no runs in the first inning then Cerritos got going scoring in the second inning scoring two runs while College of the Canyons only scored one run.

The Falcons ended the game with only five hits compared to the Cougars 16 hits. Also the Falcons had five errors which led to many runners being on base and scoring.

“I think we started off really good, but it just didn’t go our way, we had a lot of plays that just didn’t go our way,” said No. 27 Briana Lopez.

Falcons had a 3-1 lead at the top of the fourth inning and seemed to be in control of the match until it was the cougars turn at bat.

The Cougars were able to tie the game and in the next inning were able to take the lead scoring three more runs.

Lopez said, “I don’t feel like I gave a hundred and ten percent today, but I know that tomorrow I’m gonna be much better, not just only for myself, but for my team.

“I’m gonna be thinking about how I’m gonna help the team and how I can move the runners and how I can score each runner in,” she concluded.

The Falcons committed many errors that ultimately lead to the eight-point advantage for the Cougars.

Whether it was dropping a fly ball or when No. 16 Brianna Spoolstra struck out while No. 14 Kayla Aros stole a base causing an interference and resulting in both of them being called out.

“We could do better, but tomorrow I know we’ll come out stronger,” said Spoolstra, “We just need to get some more clutch hits and back up our pitchers a little more.

“Mags had a clutch hit, she got 2 RBI’s with 2 outs which was probably the highlight of the game,” Spoolstra said.

Spoolstra plans to get a lot of rest, drink a lot of water and get ready for the next game.

Her sister Tena Spoolstra had to sit out of the game do to a broken finger, but still gave moral support to the team.

The Falcons were able to score one last run in the sixth inning but ended the game still ended early due to the eight-run mercy, where the game is called if a team is down by eight runs.

The Cerritos College softball team suffered another defeat by the Cougars the following day, ending their season with a 10-5 loss.

The Falcons and cougars were tied 3-3 in the third inning, but just like the previous game, the Cougars took the lead in the next inning.

Although they were slowly catching up in the sixth inning with a two-run home run by Lopez, it wasn’t enough to win.

The Cougars scored two more runs thus ending the game with a score of 10-5.

Cerritos College softball’s 2018 season record concludes at 22-18.
