Falcons victorious against the Tartars

The Cerritos Softball team obtained their 18th win of the season against Compton College 9-0 on Thursday, April 18. This is their 12th victory of the conference championship.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Falcons would score their first run thanks to a single from outfielder No. 45 Haley Davis after a single from the center field from first baseman No. 27 Keira Bolinas, which gave Cerritos a 1-0 lead over Compton.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Falcons would extend their lead thanks to Davis who singled to left and outfielder No. 5 Victoria Medina scored.

No. 20 Sierra Gerdts got the start in the circle and worked out of a first-inning jam, where Compton put a pair of runners on base with a single and a walk. Gerdts also allowed a leadoff single in the second inning but went on to retire the next six batters.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Falcons scored seven runs. The first run was thanks to a fielder’s choice from No. 12 Deja Sendejas. Medina advanced to second base after an error and outfielder No. 36 Itzel Soto scored.

The second run was thanks to a single from third baseman No. 14 Sophia Collazo, Medina scored her second run. The third run was another fielders choice from No. 23 Nicoal Magdaleno, Collazo advanced to second base after an error and Sendejas scored.

The fourth and fifth runs were scored thanks to Davis who singled, shortstop No. 9 Tena Spoolstra ran to second base, Collazo and Magdaleno scored.

The final two runs were thanks to an error from the shortstop from Compton when third baseman No. 32 Kayla Hernandez was at bat, Davis and Spoolstra scored for the final score 9-0 after five innings.

Cerritos and Compton College faced off for the third time, with the Falcons winning the previous two matches. In February the Falcons won 11-2 after five innings and on April 2nd the Falcons won 9-1 after six innings.

When questioned on the seven runs in the third inning coach Murray said, “We hit the bat very well. Compton had three errors with their second baseman. Did I think we were going to score seven runs, no.”

When asked about winning the final games of the season coach Murray stated, “Absolutely. We have to work as a team, we have to work on executing our pitches and our offense has to show up.”

Cerrito’s host Santiago Canyon College on Saturday, Apr. 20 at 11 a.m., then host their final conference game against El Camino College on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 3 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 24, the Falcons will play their final regular season game when they travel to Grossmont College at 3 p.m.
