The Cerritos College Falcons took the second game of a doubleheader against Los Angeles Mission College on April 10 and extended their winning streak to 14 games.
The Falcons had a 12-game win streak entering the day and improved their overall record to 28-7 with both victories over Los Angeles Mission.
“I think that this team has been through a lot of this already, this season coming from behind or having to stay in a tough game,” said coach Kodee Murray on how her team has gone through in situations on coming from behind and taking the lead later in the game.
Early in the game for the first three innings, Cerritos struggled offensively to get runs in as they were able to play better in the game at the bottom of the fourth.
During that moment where they were down 3-2, two RBIs were scored by both of Cerritos’s Luna Villa and Alia Colon to put themselves on top 4-3.
Alyssa Avila made a hit to first base and a fielding error that allowed Colon to score to extend the lead 5-3.
After the bottom of the fourth inning, Cerritos had three runs off of four hits.
The starting pitcher of the game for Cerritos was Mia Star Miramontes.
Miramontes threw for 27 strikes on 37 pitches during her time on the mound where she faced 14 batters.
Tatyana Cortez came into the fourth as a pitcher as she was designated hitter earlier in the game.
As a designated hitter, Cortez went 1 for 3.
In the circle, Cortez had 50 strikes on 69 pitches and faced 19 batters where she took the win, improving her record to 23-5.
“Honestly, I felt like my performance in the beginning was a little rough, but after we kind of got a momentum going, good vibes just started going around and I realized that I am capable of playing with these girls and I’m very proud of how I ended up pitching wise and hitting wise,” said Cortez about her reflection on both pitching and hitting at the same game.
Avila went 1 for 3.
“Well I knew in the game before that, I took a couple pitches I probably should have swung at. So I was being aggressive early in the count and I just got my pitch,” said Avila on what was going on for her as she helped the team take a 5-3 lead.
Cerritos win over LA Mission with a 5-4 score as it was Sophomore night for the sophomores and a farewell to Tatyana Cortez, Amarie Encarnacion, Viki Barron, Marley Cortez, Carissa Amaya, Mia Star Miramontes and Sienna Contreras.
Tatyana Cortez said that she feels sad that she is leaving the team and is unsure about where she will be transferring to from Cerritos and is finding the best place for herself for her future.
