Alexandrea Calahan: Killing Joke was written by Alan Moore. He had no intentions for this book, other than for shock factor. Along with Editor Len Wein. And he never said anything profound about the book, he even said someone should’ve reigned him in.

When Len was asked about it, how he felt about paralyzing Barbara Gordon, he said “Cripple the B***”.

(Pause).

Um, not only did he do that, but she was also beaten, and tortured, along with being posed in some very sexual positions. The rape was implied, and then he paralyzed her

All this for reasons of for Batman and Commissioner Gordon, Which if anyone had any problems with, we hadn’t talked about it.

Fridging.

She was absolutely fridged. It is one of the most abhorrent stories ever written ever, in any media.

Um, and what’s worse there’s thousands of think pieces as to why it’s so good, and why it’s such a cultural milestone. If someone tells me why everyone should read it. This is my litmus test on whether I’m going to be around the person or not.

If someone tells me they like the killing Joke. We don’t talk, I’m going to assume they’re not safe to be around.

Moses Lopez: This is Moses Lopez from TalonMarks, I have some questions, are you Alexandrea Callaghan? Would you like to introduce yourself?

Alexandrea: Yeah, I’m Alexandrea Callaghan, I’m founder of the leading Women Comic book History Podcast.

Moses: Where do you think the state of comics is right now and where is it going?

Alexandrea: For lots of years we’ve been told the industry is dying, but the MCU and DCU have kind of invigorated it.

There’s actually a lot of new things happening in comics. There’s so many new women writers, there’s so many new younger writers, that are giving so much really wonderful work. There’s some new girl series written by a female writer that I love, and we’re getting a lot of fresh blood that’s helping to create new stories.

Moses Lopez: I’ve noticed a trend in which they’re turning villains into adaptations, I think the returns aren’t what they used to be as, what do you think?

Alexandrea: Oh 100%. My thing with adaptations is that as long as the characterization remains true I’m ok with whatever the story decides to do. But unfortunately too many times now, and it started with Joker.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion. Because it’s a VERY popular movie. But they gave Joker an origin story that he simply did not have. In fact what they gave him would’ve fit better with a Lex Luthor. In an attempt to make him look more sympathetic, but I think takes away from the character than it adds to character, I think.

Moses: Awesome, would you like to plug your instagram?

Alexandrea: Yes please, it is Alexandrea underscore Callaghan 22.

Moses: Thank you very much.

Alexandrea: Thank you so much.
