With everything going on in the world, Gen Z has increasingly turned to religion as a source of purpose and a relationship with God.
Facing real-world struggles such as unaffordable housing, rising living costs, and global conflicts, many in this generation are finding solace in faith during times of political and social uncertainty.
Christianity is the predominant faith among Gen Z, with approximately 45% identifying as Christian in the United States, according to a report from Capital News Service Maryland. While nearly half of Gen Z views religion as less important than having a personal relationship with God, about one-quarter believe religion can do more harm than good.
Despite this, many Gen Zers are attending church more frequently than previous generations, with an average of 1.9 weekend services per month, according to Barna. Common Christian denominations among this generation include Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and non-denominational groups.
Religion appears to offer younger generations a sense of stability and peace. A verse from the Bible, Isaiah 41:10, states, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my right hand.” Such teachings provide comfort to those struggling with anxiety, stress, and depression, which are prevalent among Gen Z.
Islam is also growing among Gen Z, offering peace, purpose, and a sense of community. While Gen Z Muslims make up only about 2% of the U.S. population, they account for approximately 27.2% of the global Muslim population. Many young Muslims are also engaging with their faith on platforms like TikTok, where they share practices such as prayer and singing to build community and deepen their spiritual connection.
As religion continues to play a significant role in the lives of many Gen Zers, Christianity remains the largest faith embraced by this generation. A verse from John 14:6, where Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” underscores the belief in the importance of a meaningful relationship with God.
In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, religion offers Gen Z a foundation of purpose, peace, and guidance to navigate their lives and find hope for the future.
