Welcome back day helps students get acquainted

The Welcome Back event was held last Thursday at Falcon square to help students get acquainted with some of the programs provided here at school.

Information booths such as the CalWORKs program, Student Health, and the vocational program, were some of the many that participated in the event.

“I think these events help students come back to school with ease,” explained Sara Chavez, Cal Works employee.

CalWORKs is a program for students who are single parents. It provides them with money for children and relatives caring for them.

“These is a really great program because we offer free child care, and work study in which we help our students with job resumes that will help them land a job,” said Chavez.

Students were also able to receive information on the student health services provided on campus.

“Many students don’t really know the health services that are offered here at Cerritos, and by having this event it helps them,” said Reyna de Luna, student health employee.

The student health center provides Medicare for no cost. They provide everything from free birth control to chiropractic services.

“Everything is free, except the eye exams which are $40, but we do everything possible to benefit students here,” she explained.

Another participant of the Welcome Back Day event was the vocational program booth.

” This program provides the opportunity to teach at elementary and high school level in the vocational field such as automotive and welding,” said Paul Bleak, vocational assistant.

These program looks for professionals who have had previous experience in the vocational field and are now ready to teach what they know to students.

“We try to keep these programs alive, we look for people who are passionate about the vocational field, and help them get their degrees, ” said Bleak.

Apart from the information booths, the In-N-Out truck was there once again to provide free lunch to all Cerritos College students.

In-n-Out has always been an all time favorite to student Julian Guttierez, undecided major.

” It was cool they they always have it for free. Maybe next year they can thrown a carnival or games to make it more entertaining anf enjoyable to the students.”
