Football team secures winning sesaon

Led by quarterback Jeffery Fisher’s three touchdown passes, the Cerritos College football team defeated College of the Desert, 42-27, Saturday night.

The Falcons are now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference action and if they win the next two games, they will be assured at least a tie for the top spot in the National Division’s Central Conference.

“Destiny is in now our hands,” head coach Frank Mazzotta said.

This was the first of three big games to wrap up the season and the next is against Mt. SAC, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the country, next Saturday night at 7 p.m.

The defense caused three turnovers and held the Roadrunners’ offense in check in the first half by not giving up a point until there was just minutes left in the first half.

“We got more physical and beat them to the punch all night on defense,” defensive end Ryan Davis said.

The Falcons got on the board first scoring on a 25-yard field goal by kicker Pedro Puga on their first drive of the game.

Later in the first quarter, Fisher found wide receiver Joshua Robbins for a 50-yard touchdown catch and run.

Robbins finished the game with five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

In the third quarter, the Roadrunners started to make some noise.

They were able to run the ball but a combination of turnovers and penaties ended any hope they had left.

The Falcons scored on just minutes into the fourth quarter when Fisher found wide receiver Sheldon Smith on a slant over the middle of the field for a 36-yard touchdown reception.

“I saw the safeties leave me and told the quarterback to watch me,” Smith said. “He found me and I was able to outrun everyone for the touchdown.”

On offense, running back Duane Bowen led the Falcons with 74 yards on the ground and one touchdown.

Linebacker Jack Francis led the defense with nine tackles and defensive end Kirt Puletasi had 1.5 sacks.
