Falcons Men Defeat El Camino 4-0 in soccers conference opener

With the Falcons (3-0-4) season starting Sept. 28, they are trying to start it off like any other team by getting the win, and for them specifically, break their tie streak they opened conference play against El Camino College.

Their last game on the Sept. 17 against Taft, they fell short of a win, but for what they had, was still a great game for the team.

Before the game, head coach Benny Ariaga was forced to suspend 12 of his players, 6 were starters, for disciplinary reasons, so they had no chance to get ready for the game.

Even with the disadvantages that the Falcons had, they still worked hard enough to get the tie with Taft (1-0-4), which with great stops by goalkeeper Jhovany Hernandez, who had 4 goal stops.

Coach Ariaga and Forward Chadd Johnson had both agreed that one of the main things they have to work on is the offensive part of the game, and getting the points.

On the El Camino side, momentum will be helping them go into season, for that they ended the undefeated streak of Cypress by beating them 3 to 0.

On the game that took place on Friday, El Camino started of slow, but started taking control late the first half, and scored their first goal in the 38th minute.

El Camino started breaking down the defense in the second half, and was able to score twice more, once in the 58th minute, and another 10 minutes later.

So with both trying to stay undefeated, they were both focused for the first game of the season.

Before the game, Cerritos Head Coach Benny Artiaga stated that people in attendance “Could expect Cerritos playing Cerritos ball. [El Camino] are the only undefeated team, so you can expect a battle”.

And that’s what we saw.

At the start of the game, it seemed that the game would have been an even game, up until the 5th minute, when forward Bryant Reyes picked up the pace and nearly made a goal, also with midfielder Edgar Melendrez also making one in the 12th minute.

Game was going back and forth until the  31st minute, where forward Aaron Macedo scored the first goal, and ending the Falcons scoreless streak.

Macedo then scored another goal in the 38th minute.

At the end of the half, the Falcons had the lead 2-0.

At the start if the second half, the Falcons started off with a lot intensity. In the 5th minute, midfielder Oscar Zuniga, after an assist by midfielder Daniel Fenton.

El Camino couldn’t answer back with any goals, or couldn’t defend against the Falcons offense.

The last point was scored by forward Ruban Gonzalez in the 76th minute, making the final score 4-0.

This game was a well-played game for the Falcon.

Defender Alejandro Covarrubias commented on the game by saying “We played very well, probably the best game this season. If we keep playing like this, I think we can win the championship”

Coach Ariaga commented by saying  “We had a very good collective effort offensively. We also did a lot of good things we practiced all week, and that’s the important part. As long as we come out and execute the things we train, it shows that a team has hopefully turned the corner on just trying to play as individuals”

The players of the game are Chadd Johnson and Ruben Gonzalez.

Coach Ariaga stated” I think both players really exerted themselves as players who can really make an impact here. I wouldn’t say we’ve lost them, but they haven’t been playing as aggressively offensively as they could have, but those two to me were my choices”

Next game will be on Friday at Compton College.
