Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ is strangely intriguing

Netflix has proven to succeed in producing original series like “Orange is the New Black”, “House of Cards” and “Hemlock Grove,” to name a few. When Netflix announced its newest project, “Stranger Things” it met expectations to be the next great show.

Being part of the vast majority who feels let down by how thrillers have come of age, “Stranger Things” was a refreshing new thriller sci-fi series.

The story was written by Matt and Ross Duffer or as we see them on screen The Duffer Brothers. They are a fairly new phenomenon marking “Stranger Things” as their biggest accomplishment yet.

The series is set in Hawkins, Indiana in the early 1980s where we are introduced to Will, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, a group of geeky friends playing Dungeons and Dragons in the basement.

However, when it’s time for everybody to head home, Will disappears into the abyss that is his house’s shed.

This sets the tone for the series having the viewer constantly wondering; where is Will? What could have possibly taken him? Is he alive?

The series is well paced and succeeds at keeping the viewer engaged. The twists and turns of the plot have you at the edge of your seat at every episode.

In this Netflix original series, we see Winona Ryder back at her best. Ryder plays Joyce Byers, the mother of the disappeared boy who is the main subject of the series.

One is constantly empathizing with Ryder’s character who is a desperate mother holding on to an insane idea that her son might still be alive even though his body has not been found.

She feels that he’s been communicating through supernatural means for example by manipulating the magnetic field to turn lights on and off.

The actress who takes the cake in this series is Millie Bobby Brown, who at the young age of 12 has taken on a role that demanded her to shave her head and portray a child who’s been through psychological and physical trauma.

Brown plays Eleven, a girl with supernatural abilities who managed to escape from a facility who is evidently working on research that go beyond governmental duties while it claims to be working on energy research.

Set in the 1980s this series allows us to reminisce on the works of Stephen Spielberg or the works of Stephen King. It’s the right mix of thrill and mystery to have the viewer constantly trying to solve the puzzle.

With only eight episodes it makes for a great show to binge watch during the weekend.
