On April 22 a new Habitat for Humanity ReStore will be opening its doors across the street from Cerritos College on Alondra Blvd.

In the meantime students who are 18 and over and willing to gain volunteer experience could do so. On March 10 students will be allowed to volunteer their time to get the store into shape.

Undecided major, Fleur Florian thinks that building a HFH is important,”As long as there is a contrabution made to the poor.”

Since the heavy labor has been finished, volunteers will work on light construction tasks such as stocking shelves, painting, building offices, and cleaning up.

For those who are interested just go to www.habitatla.org to register and sign up. There will be a list of current projects to choose from, find the Norwalk location and sign up. Volunteering is not only for individuals but for groups, clubs, or organization as well.

Regina Wyatt, volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity, encourages students to sign up, “It’s a lot of fun and a lot of hard work but you feel good because in the end you helped the community.”

President of the Architecture and Technology Club Steven Camarena said that he plans on having the club volunteer time and help out in any way possible to benefit the community and those in need.

In addition he also said that, “It will help us out, not only as a club, but as individuals as well. It will help us get a better understanding in our field of work.”

Students who dont want to do manual labor and still want to contribute can make a donation, HFH is still collecting funds for the Haiti relief and are in works of putting together a relief fund for Chile.

Because HFH is a nonprofit organization individuals who donate can get a tax write off.

Individuals can also donate material to the ReStore as long as it’s in working condition. Items that can be donated are as follows: power tools, doors, windows, light fixtures, furniture, any type of hardware, or anything that would go inside a home.

Fleur Florian, undecided major, thinks that it’s a good idea to donate unused material to people in need she said that,” My family always donates stuff whenever we can.”

For those who are interested in donating material, HFH offers a donation pick up service just call Nikki Cordero, donation coordinator, at 310-323-4663 ext. 127 to make an appointment.

The Norwalk HFH ReStore is one of the few stores that have an association with several movie studios and television studios like Sony and Warner Brothers.Which means whenever a movie is finished filming or a TV show is no longer in production the studios donate their unused props to the ReStore which is then sold at a discounted price.

All of the proceeds go to building new homes for low income families locally or overseas.
