Women’s track and field start season breaking records

Destiny Mack-Talalemotu begins the 2016 women’s track and field season on a high note breaking the Cerritos College record for hammer throw with a measure of 53.35 meters which earned her first place [in the event].

Arianna Lugo, was the previous [record] holder with a recorded distance of 50.54 which was set in 2009.

In a previous interview Talalemotu said, “My goal is to beat the school record.”

She was referring to the records which she holds in discus, shot put and javelin.

However, she can now add having the top mark in hammer throw to her resume.

The season opener at Mount San Antonio College, on Friday, Feb. 5, showcased the ability from the women’s field athletes.

Talalemotu was joined at the top by her teammates Stephanie Marquez, placing second, and Jessica Tobias, placing third.

Marquez threw for a distance of 42.69 meters and Tobias for a distance of 40.04.

Throwers continued to take top marks at the meet with sophomore Sarah Baker throwing for a distance of 33.32 meters, which earned her third place in javelin.

High Jumpers, Juanita Webster and Bria Palmer, took the top two spots [in women’s high jump], both clearing 1.61 meters.

Webster took first over Palmer due to the fact that she cleared the height first.

Competitors, Erica Davis and Jaime Monaco, also earned first in their respective events.

Davis cleared a height of 2.83 meters in pole vault and Monaco cleared a distance of 4.43 meters.

Running events that Cerritos took place in were the 3000 meters, 400 meter relays, 1600 meter, and 800 distance medley.

For the 3000 meters the athlete that earned the top spot for Cerritos was Marylu Pulido, sophomore, who ended the race with a marked time of 11:01.13.

Cerritos took second place in both the 400 meter relay (50.04) and the 1600 meter relay (3:51.58).

The 800 sprint medley team clocked in a time of 1:54.39, passing the Mt. SAC Mounties, and finishing at first place.

The women’s track and field team will be competing at Falcon Stadium Friday, Feb. 26th beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Finals will then continue Saturday with a start time of 10 a.m.
