Board of Trustees Meeting | August 13

The status of the search of a new superintendent and president, campus construction and the presentation of Open Educational Resources (OER) were among the items that were discussed at the board of trustees meeting Wednesday, Aug. 13.

The search for a new superintendent and president, and a further elaboration on the subject, were postponed for the next board meeting.

Five firms responded to interviews, and the interviews all subsequently took place Monday and Tuesday of this week.

A public forum, with further questioning of these firms, will take place in the next meeting as aforementioned.

In regards to construction, a special board meeting is set for Wednesday, Aug. 20, where board members will receive a tour of campus construction in order to gauge the progress.

OER was presented by Joanna Schilling, who cited that “Education is lagging behind global learning.”

OER represents different outlets of learning, like textbooks and lesson plans, and allows them to be shared with the public through free copyright permission. Schilling noted that OER is expanding.

She revealed that Cerritos College will be the first community college to “pilot” a flat fee pricing system for textbooks, effective Spring 2015, so that one fee may encompass that of an entire subject.

The next board meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 3.

  • A reasoning was provided for some of the penalties from the accreditation committee, citing “unfinished business” from the previous year’s school goals.
  • Three board items were pushed to the Wednesday, Sept. 3 meeting, including that of the president and superintendent search. The other two being the establishment of Board Subcommittees; and a survey seeking input on a Project Labor Agreement.

The Big Cheese! I am the Editor-in-Chief Denny Cristales. Just your average, mild-mannered pupusa lover who covers news. I’m not one of those jerks who would ramble on and on about what they do - such as being a former Sports and News Editor, in addition to earning third place at the CCMAs for my sports page design - no, I won’t do that (My staff also conquered the LA Times in local breaking news coverage).  What I will do is tell you to look at talonmarks.com and admire the work we do.

Also, talk to me on Twitter: @Den_Crist , or email me: . I embrace the criticism (Also, I get lonely).
