Vice President of Student Services Stephen Johnson discussed the organizational realignment of student services management with regard to titles and reporting lines at the Board of Trustees meeting last Wednesday.
Also, Judith Chowen, accounting instructor, Kepener Kieffer, business accounting instructor, and Sherry Perkins, court reporting instructor, were presented with retirement plaques for each of their commitments in appreciation of service to Cerritos College.
In addition, the Distinguished Faculty Awards Ceremony held on April 25 in the Student Center was also commented on.
@@The proposed realignment of student services presented by Johnson would have the administrative dean of admissions and records, director of disabled student programs and services, director of student affairs and administrative and dean of counseling and guidance realigned as the dean of admissions and records services, dean of counseling services, and dean of disabled student programs and services.
In other words, there would be three deans, assigned to admissions and records, counseling services and Disabled Student Program and Services in addition to, director of career and assessment, international student services coordinator of student health services and coordinator of Cal Works services.
Board Member and former Coordinator of Disabled Student Program and Services, Bob Hughlett asked what would the relationship be among the staff if the realignment were approved.
Johnson said, “Two managers would report to one dean,” he added, “and it would be a day-to-day process.”
However, Hughlett believed that it seemed as if there would be a change in who did what.
Afterward, Johnson said that there was a reason behind having the realignment in Student Service.
“The reconstructing is because Cerritos College is a large school,” he said, “and because the fact that there current eight units that will be six units instead it will provided good supervision for those in charge.”
Furthermore, it was realized that Director of Student Affairs and Dean of Counseling and Guidance were the same according to Johnson and that is why he wanted the Board to analyze and recommend the realignment.
“In doing the realignment it will make Student Services more responsive to the students of Cerritos College when they need,” Johnson explained, “and it will help with students’ success.”
Lastly, Faculty Senate President Bob Chester commented on receiving the Most Outstanding Faculty Award.
He said that it was a great honor to receive such as award and to be among the seven instructors who received recognition for contributing to Cerritos College.
