The three open seats on the Board of Trustees that will be decided on Nov. 6 may seem unimportant to most students at Cerritos College.
The decisions that these Board Members make, however, affect the programs, rules, policies, facilites and faculty members that directly affect students attending this campus.
These are some of the ways the Board of Trustees makes decisions that affect you:
o If you have a favorite instructor on campus, it is because the Board has approved the hiring of the instructor and how much money that instructor is paid.
o If you have a favorite class, the Board has approved a program based upon the recommendations of the faculty and administration in that program.
o If you’ve had a problem with a teacher or a grade, the Board has been your last place to appeal your problem.
o If you don’t have a computer at home and use the computers in the Learning Resource Center, equipment is available because the Board is responsible for providing adequate equipment, facilities and supplies for operation of the college.
o If you’ve had to get childcare for the month before your child starts school in September, the Board is responsible for the college’s academic calendar.
o If you plan on being in a program in the new Senior Center that is being built in the old strawberry fields, you can thank the Board. It is responsible for the approval of it being built.
o If you like our new president, Dr. Jane Harmon, you have the board to thank. It will also be responsible for the hiring of the new vice president of business services and vice president of academic affairs.
o The Board is also responsible for the budget, or the way money is spent on campus. This allows for money to be spent on computers, software, classrooms, energy, the Student Center, Falcon Square, In-N-Out hamburgers, and all of the other things that students enjoy on campus.
If you enjoy being a part of Cerritos College, make sure you pay attention to what is happening in the Board Room.
In the long run, it will – and does affect you.
