Freshman midfielder Christian Alvarez, who had one goal and one assist, helped the Cerritos College men’s soccer team in its 5-2 victory over Long Beach City College in its last home game of the season.

“I feel this game was mainly one-sided. We saw many opportunities to make our goals, and we took it.” Alvarez said.

The Falcons-Vikings game had goals scored very early by both teams. Freshmen defender Carlos Garcia scored the first goal of the game with an assist from defender Jaime Cano in the sixth minute.

LBCC would quickly answer back during the eighth minute.

Cerritos would take control of the half when the Falcons scored two more goals. One scored by sophomore defender Alejandro Covarrubias during a penalty kick after being pushed in the 17 minute, and another goal was scored by freshman forward Angel Ayala with a assist by Alvarez.

“The game got ugly very early in the game, but it wasn’t our fault. (The Vikings) refused to attack us.” Cerritos College head coach Benny Artiaga said.

“Even when we were up 3-1, the Vikings still refused to attack.”

The Falcons would end the game with two more goals early in the second half.

Alvarez would score a goal that hit the top left corner of the goal within the first 9 minutes of the half.

“I saw the very nice shot, so I just focused on it and made it perfectly,” Alvarez said.

Sophomore midfielder Geraldo Soto would score the Falcons last goal soon after.

The game would end with LBCC scoring its second goal with two minutes left in the game.

The Falcons’ victory hasa put them on top of the South Coast Conference, and will give them the home field advantage during the playoffs.

“The fans who were here will be seeing the same thing they saw today, during the playoffs. We will be hard to beat at our home field. We will play with intensity and speed.” Artiaga said.

The Falcons’ last three regular-season games will be away with the first one being a rematch against Mount San Antonio College.
