New ASCC appointees lack confidence

Melissa Singh, business accounting major, and Filiberto Ochoa, electronics engineering major, were appointed as Senators during the ASCC Senate meeting last Wednesday.

Singh, who was an active student while attending Cerritos High School, said during her confirmation that she would like to help out the student government along the lines of communication.

Ochoa said that he too would like to help out any way he can. Currently, he is a member of the ASET club.

During the appointment, Singh was asked if she was aware of the bylaws of the ASCC. She admittedly said that at this point she did not.

Following her appointment, Singh said that she was relieved that she was appointed. “To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from the Senators. I was really nervous.”

However, she said that she was glad to get through it.

Ochoa could not be reached for comment.

Senator Jamie Sandoval said that it was good to hear that both want to be involved but did notice that both were nervous during the question and answer period.

“Those of us in the Senate have gone through the same thing and were nervous as well, but I am sure that they will do just fine and in addition, it is good to know that they want to be involved in Senate in some capacity.”

One of the questions that Sandoval asked was regarding the events that were going to take place during March, such as the Hoe Down Days on the 13 through 15. He said that he asked those questions because he wanted to see if both Singh and Ochoa were aware of student activities on campus.

Senator Yovany Moreno also said that he took note of the fact that Singh and Ochoa were nervous, but he said that he was confident both would fit in well with the Senate.

“Once they get to know the way that the Senate works and meet all of the Senators I’ll sure that it will all be fine.”
