Are you a single parent in need of help, advice, babysitting while in school, or just someone who understands your struggle? The SPICE Club can make a difference in your life and help you find the answers to all your questions.

The members of SPICE (Single Parents In College for Excellence) have changed the outlook of the college struggle for single parents attending Cerritos Community College.

Marcia Chaney founded the SPICE Club two years ago and served as its president for 1.5 years. Chaney is also an advisor and program director on campus.

Laura Quintanilla, who took over as president this spring, hopes to bring in new members and generate positive ideas to help the clubís members.

The single parents of this club include fathers, foster parents, mothers, godparents, grandparents and anyone solely responsible for a child. People who are not parents, but have time and want to help, are also welcome.

Being a part of this club gives students a chance to get help and support, and also to obtain service hours. The SPICE Club is in need of not only members but also volunteers. The club does fundraisers and fieldtrips and is planning a book drive that will help low-income members of the club get their textbooks donated.

Quintanilla tells members they have to get involved to make a difference in the community. “You can only get out what you put in!”

The club meets twice a month in the EOPS conference room. The times and dates depend on the membersí schedules.

There is no fee to join, and children are more than welcome at the meetings. The only requirements are that you are a single parent with time, effort, patience and creativity.
