With fluid fingers dancing over the strings and haunting strains filling the air, the mystic sounds of Cerritos’ Bea Romano’s hammered dulcimer strikes a chord deep in the soul of all her listeners.

With one CD already to their credit, Romano’s former garage band “When Pigs Fly” has already grown into a local favorite at various Celtic festivals and revival concert series.

According to Romano, the band’s CD started as a classroom project in a Cerritos College business course.

“I was supposed to come up with a product, a business plan and a means for marketing it.”

After all of her hard work, it was only natural to put her plan into practical application. The result is the lighthearted and fanciful music of “pig attitude” which can be bought at the Cerritos bookstore.

The titles alone can create a giggle for the audience. “Whiskey Before Breakfast” summons the casual alcoholic in each of us.

“Soldier’s Joy” is a more traditional Celtic sad ditty, with it’s remembrance of war and loss to strike deep into the heart.

The very real history behind “Burning of the Piper’s Hut” goes a long way towards explaining the sadness behind the Celtic mystic.

Even the name of the band has an entertaining story behind it. When the band was first forming and various names were discussed and discarded, one of the members suggested all the men wear kilts during their performances.

Upon hearing this, another member loudly exclaimed, “When Pigs Fly!” and thus was the band so named.

With a lively combination of traditional instruments and a cartload of bad pig jokes, this group is not one to be missed if the opportunity comes up.

Their last performance was at the Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point this past weekend.
