Baughman proves he’s a quick study

(No byline)

College football coaches, especially at the Division I-A level, are hesitant to name an incoming junior college transfer as the team’s starting quarterback. … And with obvious reason.

The juco transfer will need to learn the team’s offensive scheme and chances are other QB’s in fall camp are much more familiar with the system.

Or perhaps the head coach and offensive coordinator are grooming the JC product for the following season by letting him get his feet wet on the sidelines. The QB in-waiting is easy to spot too, he’s the guy with a clipboard, backward baseball cap and a good shot at getting on television, once the camera pans the sidelines.

Doug Baughman, who quarterbacked Cerritos to a 16-6 record during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, took the other route. … He dove into Idaho State’s offense head-first and through two games, he is swimming in some huge numbers.

Baughman followed up a five-touchdown pass effort in his ISU debut with a 392-yard, two-touchdown effort last Saturday during his team’s 33-27 loss to Sacramento State.

After going 20-of-22 in Game 1, Baughman completed 29 of his 43 passes against Sac State. He has completed 75.4 percent of his passes (49-of-65) for 646 yards and seven touchdowns. He has been intercepted just once.

BAUTISTA, AREVALO HAVE BIG WEEKS

Bowling Green is off to a 3-0 start and that includes an impressive 20-13 nonconference victory at Big-12 foe Missouri. One of the reasons for the team’s hot start is traced back to Cerritos College.

Receiver David Bautista, now a senior at BG, caught eight passes for 90 yards and a touchdown last Saturday during his team’s 42-23 win over Temple.

Bautista leads Bowling Green in receptions and receiving yards with 18 and 209 respectively.

Former Cerritos kicker Ezequiel Arevalo, who went 7 for 7 in kicking extra points for St. Mary’s two weeks ago, went 5-for-5 on point afters during the Gaels’ 35-23 victory over Central Washington. Arevalo is 12 for 12 on PAT’s and he missed his only field goal attempt of over 40 yards.

Other Ex-Falcons’ who showed well last Saturday were Fort Hays State defensive lineman Michael Balloue. He had three tackles and a quarterback sack during a 52-45 overtime loss to Colorado Mines.

West Texas A&M’s Sirquon Hardy added six more receptions to his season total during a 28-17 loss to Northeastern State. Those catches went for 50 yards. Dave Green caught two passes for 49 yards in the same game for West Texas A&M. On defense, LeJuan Edwards completed the Cerritos’ trios efforts with four tackles and a punt return that went for two yards.

Aric Galliano is getting time on Utah State’s offensive line as well. The Aggies are 0-3 after a loss to Wyoming last Saturday.
