Take away a humbling showing at the Yavapai Tournament in Prescott, Ariz., earlier this month and the Falcons’ women’s volleyball team is stringing together a pretty solid season.
Cerritos, which has won 16 of its last 19, 30-point games, will host South Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The well-traveled squad will then head to San Diego to compete in Friday and Saturday’s San Diego Mesa Tournament.
The Falcons’ official record is 1-0, with that victory coming in an SCC match sweep over Santa Ana on Sept. 12. The other action has been in the Cerritos, Yavapai, and Cypress Tournaments. Cerritos got hot at the Cypress tournament, placing second to the host school.
Cerritos is 27-22 in 49, 30-point games thus far. Take away a 9-18 game mark at the Arizona event, the team is 18-4 in games played.
The team has shown flashes of its talent and depth both upfront and in the back. Five players have recorded 50 or more kills at the net, while five more have recorded at least 10 blocks. Six more have 16 or more service aces.
Up front, Arelyn Gallardo and Tiffany Amete each have 106 kills. Gallardo has added 30 blocks and 63 defensive digs, while Amete has 33 blocks, 23 aces, and 28 digs.
Vanessa Cid, Jessica Baez, and Michelle Perkins have thrown down 72, 59, and 57 kills collectively. Cid has 32 blocks and Perkins has added 21 stuffs. Perkins also has 23 assists.
Susan Liufau has been the team’s valued defensive and serve specialist. She leads the team with 35 aces and 68 digs. Pearl Arvizu has balanced numbers with 14 kills, 16 aces, and 39 digs.
Jennifer Bullock (team-high 322 assists) and Berlin Mika (101 assists) have run the offense well of late. Bullock also has double digits in kills (19), blocks (10), aces (17), and digs (29).
April Turner also has proven a valuable defensive player with 59 digs and 25 aces in just 23 games.
