Cerritos wrestlers grasp win over Santa Ana

By winning six out of ten matches, the Cerritos College wrestling team defeated Santa Ana College, 28-17 Wednesday in the Falcons’ gym.

Falcons’ coach Greg Gascon said that Santa Ana “showed us their strengths and our team’s weaknesses,” and is “glad we found them out now.

“As a whole, the team did really well.”

He added that key wins by alternates Chris Loera and Brian Rodgers “gave a spark to a lot of the other guys on our team.”

Rodgers, wrestling at 174 lbs., defeated Guillermo Gonzalez, and Loera, wrestling in the 125 lb. weight class, defeated Santa Ana’s Adrian Arriero by a technical fall.

Loera said, “It was a tough match. He (Arriero) put up a fight, and so I had to keep on going.

“I was wearing him out.”

Gascon called Damacio Page, who won his match at 133 lbs., the outstanding wrestler for the meet, and said Gabriel Barragan and Josh Johnson gave fine performances.

Page scored points early and often in his win over Jose Palomares, and Johnson took control of a close match in the third round in his win over Israel Sanchez at 141 lbs.

Barragan, at 157 lbs., was leading his match against Jamie Chaves by several points, and won by injury default when Chaves was unable to continue after the second round.

Cerritos’ Loy “Buddy” Luna was pinned by Andres Sepuveda at 149 lbs., and Andy Lopez (165 lbs.) and Vince Teachman (197 lbs.) dropped close decisions to Ramiro Carasa and Jeff Webster, respectively.

Cerritos’ Andy Tufnell (184 lbs.) and Santa Ana’s Rodrico Cibrian (Heavyweight) were awarded forfeit victories.
