Fox chosen as 2002 homecoming queen

Fox chosen as 2002 homecoming queen

One could feel the tension in the air as each Homecoming Queen candidate walked up to the stage to hear the news at Saturday’s Homecoming Game. Just who was the lucky woman to be crowned Homecoming queen for the night?

Heather Fox was.

Fox was shocked as her named was called out. So shocked in fact that she was at a loss for words.

Fox, currently a cheerleader, had the entire Cerritos College squad screaming and chanting her name.

“I am very excited and I feel very surprised,” Fox said. “It is such and honor to represent Cerritos College and I will do my best to fulfill everyone’s expectations.”

These past two weeks have not been the easiest for Fox though. She was surprised at how much time campaigning took up. In fact, she spent over $300 trying to promote herself and her club, LDSSA.

She also had to juggle both classes and her campaign.

“Thank God I had no midterms! But I probably could have paid a little more attention to school, ” Fox said.

Fox was escorted during half time by her father Murrel Fox. When she won the title, Fox was noticeably very excited for his daughter. “She’s just great. But she’s always been a winner in her family’s heart,” Fox said.

Even though Heather was the one crowned, other finalist’s still felt that they were winners as well. Haydee Rodriguez, who was sponsored by Phi Beta Lambda (the business club), was happy for Fox.

“She’s so great,” Rodriguez said, “she really deserved it.”

Fox’s main reason for participating was to meet new people. “I think that I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about how it is to work with people of a diversity,” she said.

“These women are so wonderful,” said Fox, speaking of her fellow finalists “these past two week’s I’ve gotten to meet a lot of new people and this whole experience has just been great.

“You know, it’s not about being Queen,” Fox said with a serious face, “It’s really about who you are. Inside and out. It’s about what you’ve got to offer people.”

So does Fox have any advice for people thinking about running for the title of Homecoming Queen next year?

“Just be prepared to put a lot into it. You gain a lot of appreciation for what goes within the college.”

She then paused to look up at the screaming audience: “Oh wow…this is unbelievable!”
