Two Cabinet members and one Senate member were appointed to their positions during the ASCC Senate meeting last Wednesday.

Those appointed were:

• ASCC Senator, Brian Daniel Kochems
• Commissioner of Athletics, Christian Galvez
• Assistant to Information Technology, Alex Alvarez

In addition, Dr. David Young, career services counselor, informed the Senate about a course titled “Dynamics of Leadership” that is currently being offered that develops an understanding of theories principles and techniques of leadership.

He stated during the meeting, “My hope is that you will inform students about this class because you (the Senators) are representing the students of Cerritos.”

During the course Young said that students will attend class once a week on Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and students will watch a film relating to leadership skills.

Following the meeting, Senator Leo Zambrano said, that he thought that Young’s interest in leadership skills was motivating.

“He made a good point,” Zambrano said, “because there have been important throughout history who have exemplified leadership in addition to, people who have taken action such as men like Cesar Chavez.”

Zambrano said that he too has taken action by informing students about the leadership class during his own classes and hopes students will consider giving the class a chance.

Afterward, Young elaborated on his hope.

“Students will need to learn leadership skills as they go into the corporate world,” he said, “but I also think that this class will be really fun, entertaining and interesting as well.”

Students within the ASCC Cabinet, Senate and Court are leading by example because of the leadership they are provide for the campus and its students, Young said.

Next, the Senate appointed Kochems, Galvez and Alvarez, to their positions, but not before Galvez faced tough questions about why he wanted to be commissioner of athletics.

Sergeant of Arms Atila Bojoh and Sentor Jaime Sandoval questioned Galvez as to why he wanted to take the position of commissioner of athletics despite that he wasn’t involved in any type of sports.

His answer was that he wanted to let students know about the athlete of the year awards as well as informing students about athletics in general.

After their appointment, Kochems and Galvez said that both hope to help out ASCC.Alvarez was unavailable for comment.

As commissioner of athletics, Galvez said he hopes to do a good job.

Galvez, an ASCC Senator last year, commented that there is a difference between the Senate and Cabinet.

“Being on the Senate I was everywhere,” he said, “and now with the Cabinet I will be focused on one general area and I hope to work directly that athletic organizations on campus.”

Galvez admitted that he did face a tough round of questions, but he was glad that he was appointed.

Kochems also said he hopes to help out as well and is ready to work.

ASCC Vice President Alex Armendariz said, that the three appointed are hard workers and that each showed interest, “and that is what the ASCC Senate looks for someone that is not afraid to get (his or her) hands dirty.”
