Dental program goes on air

Cerritos College Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene program was featured in an episode which was aired on “American Health Journal Television” on Feb. 10.

It was also viewed on “KTLA-TV” on Channel 5 News Feb. 21 at noon.

There will also be an up coming feature air live on KOCE-TV on Channel 50 on Tuesday, March 30 at 8:30 a.m.

The show spotlights different Community Colleges such as our very own Cerritos College.

There was also training tips given and hands on with the equipment as well.

Dean of Health Occupations, Jenine Nolan said, “Community Colleges train approximately 85 percent of all Dental Hygienists.”

Rocio Mendez, Dental Assisting major said, “I think it is a really good program, I entered the program in August of 2009 and I have loved it ever since. I believe this program will open doors for me and get me some where far with this career.”

According to history it has changed for the better of the students all over who are taking this major.

Before if you were interested in this field, as part of homework was an actual hands on experience working with different patients.

Sometimes just working in the Dental Offices to have hours that needed to be met by graduation.

Currently you can’t do these things any longer because there is now a law stating that you can’t have that hands on experience while trying to receive the Certificate of Dental Assistant.

Now Community Colleges try to find a way to work with the strong emphasized law.

Dean Jenine Nolan of the Health Occupation Department says, “The Cerritos College Dental  Assisting and Dental Hygienist Program are impacted due to the large number of students wishing to enter the field. However, the graduates are higher as well in this field.”

The  Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist promotes their program by going to variety of High Schools, some of which include; Artesia, Bellflower, Downey, Norwalk and La Mirada High School.

They share not only information about their program but also to speak to the Seniors mostly to see where they are in headed in life.

They  offer Certificate and Degrees in more than 180 areas of this study in 9 different Divisions.

There has been more than 1,200 students has successfully completed and graduated from this field.
