Not all activities last week circulated around the election of the Homecoming Queen and her court. With a theme of ‘Movie Classics,” 17 academic and curricular clubs participated in the 2001 Homecoming Parade of Floats that made their showing during half-time of the football game against El Camino College. The float building itself lasted all last week, with the clubs chomping at the bit to get “the best” platforms and to pick the spots with the brightest lighting, when in fact the only difference was which places were closest to the restrooms. Hammers pounded, power drills hummed and saws… umm, sawed… as club members labored under the watchful eye of their club advisers and various armchair quarterbacks. “I just hope it doesn’t fall on me,” giggled student Cheny Phat as her club Alpha Gamma Sigma struggled to put up the backdrop to its float “Snow White.” The float themes ranged from as far back as the original black and white “King Kong” and “Psycho” to the much-anticipated new movie “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” There was even the oddball float “Jailhouse Rock,” which was technically not a classic movie but rather a pre-MTV music video. Nevertheless, anything with the King in it has GOT to be included. Free pizza and sodas Friday night courtesy of the ASCC were just a bonus to the students who referred to the building as a labor of love. “It’s either work or fun, I don’t know which,” said Laura Shauses, who helped build three different floats and ended up covered head to toe in tissue paper and spray paint.
