Swim teams split meets at Pasadena

There are high hopes this season for the men’s and women’s in swimming teams of Cerritos.

The teams met Pasadena in a dual meet Feb. 23.

The women beat Pasadena City College, 64-50, and the men lost to the Lancers 78-43.

Coach Hal Simonek said, “The main goal for the women is that we have a chance to be in first or second in the conference.”

“I say this based on the times the women had against Pasadena.”

“The men have to work to improve them selves.”

Katrina Kimble made the 50-butterfly event.

Don Weyrick said, “She should make the 100-butterfly event and 100 freestyle event, because she has speed and is working hard.

“Once she gets endurance, meaning that she needs to get more strength.”

Weyrick added, “Laura Luevano should be one of the top three in state in the 100-fly event and 200-freestyle event, and individual medley event.”

“Both Kimble and Luevano carry the women’s team.”

Weyrick also said that Danny Garcia should make state in the 100-free style, 100-beast stroke and 50-freestyle events.

“He has always worked hard.

“He hasn’t been able to practice because of his shoulder injury. He just got back into shape.”

Garcia said that he wants to get started with the season.

“We are tough. We are ready for the season, because the swimmers on the team are strong in their events. And that together we will cause good performance for the team.”

Against Pasadena, the women won both of their relays, and Luevano, Kimble, and Jill Stricklannd swept their events.

Swimmer Jose Pacheco said, “Hopefully we will have a good season, I say this because the type of training we been having. The coaches want the best from us.”

“We see ourselves matching up with all the teams in the conference, because we have good swimmers.”

Strickland said, “If the women beat Long Beach, they should know where they stay in the conference.”

“I think we are ready for the season, because in our last meet most of the women took first place. I say this based on the times in our last meet.”

Swimmer Jessica Colunga said, “I think is going to be a good season, because we have fast swimmers.

“We have a good coaching staff. I think we have a good chance of matching up with all the teams in the conference.”
