Volleyball team takes two of three

The Cerritos women’s volleyball team defeated L.A. Harbor College, three games to none Friday at Cerritos.

The Falcons scored the final six points to win game one, 30-11.

Trailing 11-8 in the second game, Cerritos, aided by blocks from Susan Liufau and Tiffany Amete, scored seven straight points on the way to a 30-18 win.

Cerritos took the match by winning game three, 30-12, as the Seahawks scored only four times on their own serve.

Middle Blocker Michelle Perkins said, “We did a lot better at keeping the intensity up, even when we saw that it would be a slow game.”

She added that the Falcons “tried to play our game,” which is to be “very consistent and not make mistakes.”

Middle blocker Vanessa Cid scored 12 kills, while Amete and setter Jennifer Bullock added eight and outside hitter Arelyn Gallardo seven.

Wednesday the Falcons defeated host L.A. City by scores of 30-24, 30-19 and 30-20.

Thursday, with room for a game on the schedule that opened when the Sacramento City match was cancelled, Cerritos was swept at Pierce College by scores of 30-25, 30-23 and 30-20.

Coach Teresa Ortega said that the team, made up entirely of freshmen, is showing a lot of improvement.

She added that in the loss to Pierce, the team “made a lot of mistakes” and was “tense.”

She said that the Falcons will be ready Wednesday for its next game at Pasadena, and that if the team can “keep ball control and play our game, we can (win) it.”
