With the expiration of the term of current Board Member Dorothy Carfrae and her decision to not seek re-election, the Cerritos College Board of Trustees is guaranteed to have at least one new member after the Nov. 6 election.
Six candidates are vying for three open seats.
Kevin Fulton of Downey, Eric Gutierrez of Norwalk, Billy Hector of Lakewood, and Gary Murph of Bellflower are the challengers.
Fulton is a former Cerritos College student who is awaiting his bar examination results and plans to practice law.
Gutierrez is a part-time teacher who also does marketing feasibility reports for resorts and hotel chains.
Hector is a postmaster in the city of Lawndale.
Murph is a retired vice president from California State University Los Angeles.
Current Board President Cheryl Epple of Bellflower and current Board Vice President Bob Verderber of Downey are incumbents seeking re-election.
Epple is local tax consultant.
Verderber is a retired professional engineer and currently works as a middle-school algebra teacher.
The Cerritos Community College District serves the surrounding communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Lakewood, Norwalk and South Gate.
