Six seek three spots on college board

With the expiration of the term of current Board Member Dorothy Carfrae and her decision to not seek re-election, the Cerritos College Board of Trustees is guaranteed to have at least one new member after the Nov. 6 election.

Six candidates are vying for three open seats.

Kevin Fulton of Downey, Eric Gutierrez of Norwalk, Billy Hector of Lakewood, and Gary Murph of Bellflower are the challengers.

Fulton is a former Cerritos College student who is awaiting his bar examination results and plans to practice law.

Gutierrez is a part-time teacher who also does marketing feasibility reports for resorts and hotel chains.

Hector is a postmaster in the city of Lawndale.

Murph is a retired vice president from California State University Los Angeles.

Current Board President Cheryl Epple of Bellflower and current Board Vice President Bob Verderber of Downey are incumbents seeking re-election.

Epple is local tax consultant.

Verderber is a retired professional engineer and currently works as a middle-school algebra teacher.

The Cerritos Community College District serves the surrounding communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Lakewood, Norwalk and South Gate.
