A look into Women’s History Month

March is a time of remembering all the women who have made history or who are continuing to make history today through America.

Before women had rights, women in all parts of the world were looked as evil and source of temptation. Men always accompanied women. Women could not own property or marry again if their husbands died.

In many countries even today, male children are still preferred over female children.

Women in other places of the world don’t have as many rights as women in United States. Women should be grateful for those women who took a stand and fought for their rights and the future of womankind.

Women such as Eleanor Roosevelt who joined the Women’s World Trade Union to work for the minimum wage laws for women in 1922 or Rosa Parks who was the first African American woman to fight for civil rights. These women have made a difference.

In 1987, National Women’s Month became nationally recognized as a month to honor women. Previously, women were honored on a certain day or week but because of women organizations, museums, libraries, youth leaders and educators, they helped March become that national month for women.

Presently, women today keep making a difference. Women such as Maya Angelou, a famous writer, who struggled with four years of silence after being sexually abused when she was eight, writes poetry while acting on stage while later receiving a Tony nomination for her performance in “Look Away”.

Another women is muscian Alanis Moresette. She made a differnce by expressing her sorrow and anger for women everywhere as well as men, about her experiences and what she learned from them.

Many women today and in the past are making a difference whether through politics, comedy, poetry, or music.
