In an effort to catch Cerritos up to the 21st century, there have been projects all around campus to update the school, the new ASCC marquee being one.

“It’s part of the campus transformation,” explains Michael Barrita, ASCC president.

The new ASCC marquee is located in a highly visible area, right in front of the student center where Barrita says, “It’s right in the middle of student traffic and students are able to get quick information on what’s going on around school.”

Instead of handing out flyers for every event coming up, Barrita feels this would be more efficient.

“This will be more environmentally friendly, so we’re not wasting paper on countless flyers that are mostly getting thrown away in the trash anyways,” Barrita tells me.

There are more than 20,000 students at this school and more are enrolling every semester.

As a new student, this could be a valuable commodity if taken advantage of.

Barrita agrees, “This could be very beneficial for new incoming students.

“They will be able to find new information for opportunities that the school offers that they might not know about.”

The sign is not quite finished though.

Leaving it unfinished is the ASCC banner that sits below the brand new LCD screen, tired and worn out.

“We have already looked in to getting a new ASCC sign to replace the old one. It’s part of the bigger plan for that area,” Barrita explains.

What he is referring to is the “reflection pool,” a water fountain that sits empty behind the sign.

It’s an eyesore for students who may or may not know that it sits empty due to maintenance issues.

“We have plans to fill in the reflection pool and turn that area into a garden. It will be cheaper for the school to maintain and more appealing to the eye,” Barrita states, sounding hopeful.
