“I want to be the voice of the students,” said Byron Barahona on Thursday.
That is why the political science major was out collecting 75 signatures as part of the application process to be on the September ASCC Senate ballot.
Another senate hopeful, chemistry major Janice Silva said, “Ever since the economy’s been down, it’s been hard. I want to provide assistance to anyone who needs help.”
Bianca Mesinan, undeclared major, said her decision to run was out of an urge to, “Do something interesting.”
The Associated Students of Cerritos College had a booth set up in the quad for anyone who wanted to pick up an application. They are also available in the Office of Student Activities.
Program Assistant Nancy Bonilla outlined some important requirements for applicants.
“Students must be enrolled in five units, have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 and maintain a 2.0 GPA throughout the semester,” she said. “They must also have their paid student activities sticker on their ID.”
The signatures must be turned in on Sept. 4 before 4:00 p.m.
“I’m still considering positions,” said Barahona of his future plans if he were to be elected. “I probably would like to get into the Budget Committee.”
Elections will take place Sept. 9 and 10.
