Cerritos College ASCC kicked off the 2010 fall semester with Welcome Night starting Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m., and Welcome Day on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m.

While students gathered around Falcon Square to wait in line to receive their free burgers, chips, and soda, other students mingled to the beat of the music by a local DJ.

In order to receive the free burgers brought by In-N-Out, students had to obtain a student ID with a fall semester sticker and all ASCC fees must be paid.

Garry Cain, coordinator of Judicial Affairs, who participated in the welcome-back festivities, said, “The students seem to be really appreciative of what ASCC is doing and they also recognize that the dollars that they spend on their fees bring some special little perks for students who have their ID cards.

Cain went on to say, “This is a campus I believe that is very student-oriented, student-friendly and we try to have as many activities like this to show the students that we really do care about them.

But not all students were satisfied with ASCC’s setup, like Political Science major Veronica Leon. “They (ASCC) make me get a sticker and I don’t like it. It’s a hassle because you have to wait in line to get the sticker and then wait in line to get the In-N-Out. They should multitask,” Leon said.

To some, getting the ID and sticker is the easy part, others find it hard to make time due to their busy class schedule.

Undecided major Olivia Perez has been attending Cerritos for three years and was finally able to get her free burger.

This is my first time because I actually have an hour gap in between my classes to get my In-N-Out,” she said.

Aside from free burgers and music, there were several student service booths along Falcon Square to show the students what Cerritos has to offer.

Booths such as EOPS, Career Services, Library Aid, and School relations were available to help direct, guide, and answer any question that needed to be answered.

Rose Vasquez, a worker for Career Services, was at the outreach table Tuesday. “We mainly want to let students know what we are and what we have to offer,” Vasquez said.

“We have great career counselors that will meet with students for career direction but unfortunately a lot of them don’t even know we exist.
