Guns for campus police approved at senate meeting

A vote on campus police firearms and an introduction of new funded software, were among the things discussed on Wednesday during the ASCC meeting.

The senate voted and approved to pass the legislation on the possession of campus police firearms.

It passed with 21 yes and zero nos and two abstentions.

Though the senate approved to pass the legislation, the cabinet has yet to finalize approval of the legislation to make it official. The cabinet will vote on the matter on Monday.

During the meeting, the Premier at Home Software company demonstrated how their software works and how it will be beneficial for students, giving them access to students even when they are at home.

The program is accessible for Cerritos College students only and it allows them to convert books into mp3’s, electronic libraries, electronic text reading as well as other beneficial functions.

Though all Cerritos College students can benefit from the Premier at Home, it mainly targets all ESL, dyslexic, and disabled students.

Bryant Fraps, software technical supporter, said, “Students with reading disabilities can benefit from the software, it has these functions that can read back text.”

The software was introduced to Cerritos College because it was a need for students in the Disabled Student Programs and Services program.

Though other colleges offer the software, many have lost it.

Tim Kyllingstad, senior technician, said “a lot of schools lost the programming when they lost funding.”

ASCC has approved to fund this programming and hope to get the word around to Cerritos College students so they can access it in the comfort of their home.
