Media procedures addressed, Master Plan update

ASCC Senate met to discuss what needed to be done before approaching finals.

One of the first things discussed was regarding the media policy here on campus, with a presentation by Miya Walker, director of college relations, public affairs, and governmental relations.

The presentation was given as a means to ease the troubled minds of the ASCC Senate, as this was brought up in public forum in last week’s meeting.

This draft brought the concern that it would be censoring the media, particularly the Talon Marks newspaper here at Cerritos College as brought up by News Editor Gustavo Lopez and Managing Editor Daniel Green during the public forum last week.

Walker assured the ASCC Senate that this would not be a constraint upon the Talon Marks newspaper, but something of the opposite.

Another item on the agenda was a Master Plan/ Budget Update presentation by David El Fattal, vice president of business services.

This presentation was a general look at what renovations the campus will be having over the course of some years. And of course with the presentation was the inclusion of the budget and how it plays into the Master plan.

Other smaller items on the agenda, including funding for the Roots of Sustainability Project Recycling Program, and amended meeting time, which were discussed in short, but to-the-point discussions.

This was the last meeting of the semester for the ASCC Senate, Dr. Gilbert Contreras, dean of student services had some thoughts about how the ASCC has done this semester.

“The student government has been very engaged on campus”, Contreras said.

“The student leaders have really taken initiative to look at not only how they’re governed, and what documents they’re using, but to take leadership on campus. I think it’s a real testament to the students who have stepped forward and who have filled these positions.”

The ASCC Senate will be meeting next semester in BK 111 on the first week of the semester.
