ASCC Senate held a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18 to discuss the Student Affair’s position concerns, pre-approved funding for Math Club’s “Super Pi” day conference trip, the Student Trustee gave a presentation about his responsibilities and the Senate was informed about University tours and the Cerritos 5k OBS fit challenge.

The next meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. in BK-111.

ASCC Student Affair’s position raises concerns and questions. There was open discussion where some ASCC senators addressed the lack of transparency, no job description, possible violation of Equal Employment Opportunity Act, no application process, conflict of interest and how it was already approved at the Board of Trustees.

A solution that was brought up by Senator Ivan Oyarzabel to ask Charles Caguioa and Miles Aiello to resign from their Student Affairs positions and allow the jobs to be open for everyone.

Senator Stefany Beltran said, “I think them resigning and them opening up the positons will create transparency and will give the opportunity to a lot of students that maybe are qualified or who really do need the job especially when it’s a lot of money at $14.35 an hour.”

Aldemar Sanchez said, “This is very necessary because these jobs are supposed to be student jobs but this wasn’t open to all students, I feel that the senators who asked them to step down, legislation was made to ask them to step down, is a great one because they will ask them what they’re supposed to as Vice President and President to give an equal opportunity to all the students.”

Further discussion was postponed for next week’s meeting.

Math Club was pre-approved by ASCC Senate for their trip to the CM3 South “Super Pi” Day Conference.

Student Trustee Daniel Flores Resendiz, made a presentation informing ASCC Senate about the Board of Trustees and what the responsibilities of Student Trustee are. Board of Trustee meetings are every two weeks at 6:30 p.m in the board room.

Marvelina Barcelo, Transfer Center co-director/counselor, informed the Senate about the lack of students signing up for University Tours, forcing deadlines for some sign ups to be extended.

More information about Spring 2015 University tours can be found on their website http://cms.cerritos.edu/transfer-center/campus-tours.htm

Athletic Director Dan Clauss informed the Senate about the upcoming Cerritos 5k OBS and Fit Challenge that will take place March 8.
