Four CerritosCollegestudents stood above the rest with their play on the field.

Linebacker David Lopez, outside hitter Channel Puou, swimmer and water polo player PJ Gabayeron, and guard April Perry have excelled in their respective sports and help lead their teams to success.

These four sophomores have garnished several honors during their two-year stay at CerritosCollegeand are now headed to further their careers at the next level.

 

Clogging the middle

 

Lopez might be the most decorated player in this year’s class as he was named 1st Team All-America, All-State, and All-Conference.

He was also named the Defensive Player of the Game in the Southern California Championship Game and the Southern California Bowl.

The middle linebacker accounted for 158 total tackles, nine sacks, and four forced fumbles in his two-years at Cerritosand he will continue his college career at PortlandStateUniversity.

 

Jumping to kill

 

While Puou wasn’t able to lead the volleyball team to the postseason during her sophomore campaign, she helped the team exceed expectations.

After losing outside hitter Sarah Naranjo to transfer, Puou had big shoes to fill and she filled those well earning All-South Coast Conference honors for the second consecutive season.

She missed several games earlier in the regular season but she recovered in time to lead the team in kills (179) and attempts (605).

The volleyball team was one of several teams whose games were relocated to GahrHigh Schooldue to the current construction of the Cerritos College Aviary Gym.

Assistant coach Gay Castaneda acknowledged the fact that the move affected the team.

“We really needed a home gym this season,” she said, “it’s just not the same playing [at Gahr].

Puou finished her playing career at Cerritoswith 1,378 attempts, 441 kills and 255 digs.

 

Splash down

 

After only his first season, Gabayeron put up one of best swimmer careers as a Falcon, winning three state championships, breaking four individual records and two relay team records.

He was also named Swimmer of the Meet at last year’s state championships.

His list of accolades also includes All-American honors in three individual races, three relay races, and posting the second fasted time in the country in the 200-yard Individual Medley.

His time in the 100-yard breaststroke was the sixth fastest time in the country.

 

Make me like Perry

 

Standing at only 5’6, Perry’s explosive ability on the court has helped her in her two seasons on the women’s basketball team.
