Former Cerritos College linebacker Kirk Jellerson was promoted to Whittier College’s head coach.
Jellerson, in his third coaching stint with the Poets, played at Cerritos during the 1980 and 1981 seasons.
He was the team’s defensive coordinator the last two seasons and was named the interim head coach before being promoted on Monday.
In addition to Whittier College, Jellerson’s 24-year coaching career spans across the country at schools such as, Fullerton College, Western Washington University, Utica College (NY), Kean University (NJ), Chapman University, Plymouth State University (NH), and Cerritos College.
Former head coach B.J. Hammer was fired on Nov. 16, a week after the Poets finished a disappointing 2-7 season.
Two days later, a nationwide search that included 250 applicants began.
Jellerson was one of six finalists before being named the school’s 19th head coach.
