Powell Grant offered to students in the arts

The Santa Fe Springs Chamber/League Youth Enrichment Fund is hosting its annual Powell Grant for any student currently attending college or is a senior in high school and pursuing a major in the arts field.

The recipient will be awarded a maximum amount of $2, 500.

Music major Dominick Angulo is an applicant for the grant as he feels this will aid him to buy new and up-to-date equipment.

“Scholarships and grants are a great way to keep students motivated and serve as an asset to help you reach your goals,” Angulo said.

To qualify for the Powell Grant students must be a Santa Fe Springs resident of two years or longer, must be pursuing a major in arts, have a minimum grade point average of 2.5, submit an essay explaining why they are a good candidate for the award and must also submit two letters of recommendation.

The deadline for the Powell Grant is no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25 and must be submitted to the Santa Fe Springs Chamber/League Youth Enrichment Fund.

The selected finalists will be notified and will undergo an oral interview on Thursday, May 2, 2013 to help decide who would be awarded the grant.

Once awarded the grant the recipient is required to meet with the Powell Grant Committee at least once after receiving the award.

“Art majors can be under estimated as not enough credits are given to the arts, even though it is as important as any other subject on campus,” said theater major Brian Rodriguez.

“This grant is a great resource for a student majoring in arts since us art majors know that we have to keep up with the new technology and it isn’t always at a cheap price,” added Rodriguez.

If your application is denied or not approved there are no restrictions on how many times one can apply for the Powell Grant. However, they must apply annually for reconsideration.
