Busy getting hasseled by the man . . .

In last semester’s final issue of the Talon Marks, a student who apparently had a bad experience with campus police officers sent in a letter to the editor.

This officer had been “inconsiderate,” and had “condescending” attitudes while giving him a ticket.

According to the letter, the student was given a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign he says he did stop at.

When he tried to dispute the officers’ claim, he says their attitudes became even worse.

I wish we could have heard the officers’ side of the story because there are two sides to every story.

We’ve all heard terrible stories about inconsiderate and condescending police officers.

Then again, we’ve also heard stories about people who refuse to admit when they’re wrong.

Sometimes these people have the attitude that they have been terribly wronged by any form of contact with police.

I applaud this student for sending in his letter about his experience with the campus police.

Whether completely accurate, or maybe a little overblown, the community must be aware of even the slightest possibility the police might have been a little heavy-handed.

If that type of behavior is allowed to go on unchecked, there is the danger that it could become worse.

I am sure the corrupt officers at the L.A.P.D.’s Rampart division did not immediately start planting drugs on people.

They probably started disregarding people’s rights on a much smaller scale, maybe by being inconsiderate and condescending with traffic violators.

When they saw people did not speak out against it, they may have became more arrogant and confident their mistreatment of people.

The police are people who are supposed to protect us and make us feel safe.

They are not supposed to cause us to worry about mistreatment whenever we are pulled over for a traffic violation.

I hope the situation the student wrote about in his letter was overblown.

I hope Cerritos College’s campus police are fair and considerate to the students they are supposed to be protecting.
