Fall sports kick into high gear

While Cerritos College’s fall semester concludes its fourth week, five of the eight fall sports’ teams will open its respective seasons on Friday. The football team kicks off its 10-game regular season on Saturday night with a huge home game.

The women’s volleyball team will take a six-hour drive to compete in the two-day Prescott Tournament. The event begins on Friday at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., which is located two hours north of Phoenix.

The men’s and women’s water polo teams begin their 2001 seasons at seperate tournaments. The men will open play on Friday at the Ventura Tournament, while the women will begin two-day action on Friday at the Cypress Invitational.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams each will take part in the season-opening Southern California Championship Preview meet in Lancaster on Friday.

The Falcons’ football team, a club that finished 8-3 last season, begins its possible quest for a state and national title against highly-regarded Bakersfield. Kickoff at the stadium is 7 p.m.

Bakersfield went 10-2 last season and is ranked in many JC football polls as the best team in Southern California heading into the season. Cerritos also is ranked in many state and national polls.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will see action on Friday as well. The women, which are coming off of a 3-1 victory over Golden West, will begin South Coast Conference play on Friday when they host El Camino at 4 p.m. The men, who are 1-1 on the season, will travel to Citrus on Friday for a nonconference game.
