Falcon men continue streak, women end another

It was a double dose of victory for Cerritos College as its water polo teams scored convincing wins over Los Angeles Trade Tech Wednesday at Cerritos.

Thw men’s team won its fifth game in a row with a 12-0 shutout of Tech, and the women’s team got its first win in 15 tries with a 17-11 victory.

Women win for first time

The women’s team (1-14, 1-2 in SCC) led 5-1 after the first quarter, and increased its lead to 7-1 with 1:29 left in the first half.

Cerritos outscored Trade Tech 5-4 in the third and fourth quarters to keep the lead and seal the win.

Jill Strickland led the Falcons with five goals.

Jessica Meili and Megan Robles added three goals apiece.

Robles said that the team has more experience as the season progresses.

She added that the players, many competing in water polo for the first time, had “pulled through as a team” during the course of the season.

“Hopefully there will be more wins.”

Yazmin Sanchez, playing in goal for Cerritos, blocked 11 shots.

Coach Glenn Myer called the game “a good win.”

“We could have played a little bit better. There were a couple of mental mistakes.”

He added that Trade Tech is in its first year fielding a team. “They’re like we were. Just getting started (as a program).”

Wednesday the Falcons will host Long Beach City, ranked fifth in the state.

Myer said, “We hope to play a lot better.”

Men extend streak

The Falcon men (9-4, 2-1 in SCC) scored seven goals in the first quarter en route to an 8-0 halftime lead.

A total of nine players scored goals for Cerritos, with Daniel Garcia, Charlie Eldridge and Bryan Brown each scoring twice.

Duje Kaliterna said that since Trade Tech is in its first year of fielding a team, the Falcons “played pretty easy on them.”

He said the team will have to practice hard for its next game Wednesday against Long Beach City, calling the Vikings “tough competition.”
