Falcon spikers set for second half of season

Look at the team, not its record.

For a team composed entirely of freshmen, the Cerritos College women’s volleyball team shows plenty of brilliance in its play.

The Falcons finished the first half of South Coast Conference play with a record of 3-4 (5-5 overall) after being beaten in three straight games by El Camino Friday at Cerritos.

They will begin the second half Wednesday at Mount San Antonio College, who beat them in straight games earlier this season. Game time is 7 p.m.

The first game featured 35 service changes, but Cerritos was able to score more than two consecutive points only once.

With three kills by Meagon McConnell, the Warriors scored the final six points to win the game, 30-24.

In game two, El Camino scored three straight points to take a 20-16 lead.

The Falcons came back with four straight points, taking a 25-24 lead when middle blocker Vanessa Cid dropped the ball over the net.

The Warriors, serving for game point, were denied by a block by Michelle Perkins that tied the score at 29.

But El Camino won the game, 32-30 on a kill by Hayley Larkin.

Susan Liufau, Falcons’ outside hitter, called it a “really challenging game. We really steeped it up in that game.”

She added that the Warriors were consistent, “and we still have things that we need to work on.”

Cerritos took a 14-12 lead in game 3 on a kill by outside hitter Arelyn Gallardo.

The Warriors used runs of three and four points to take the lead as the Falcons could not hold service for the rest of the game, winning it, 30-19 on a kill by McConnell.

Falcons’ setter Jennifer Bullock called El Camino a really good team.

“They played a good game. We just have to stay more consistent.

“We playedthem with intensity, and that’s all that counts.”

She addedthat the team is ready for the second round of conference play. “We should be able to take Mt. SAC.

“The first time, they beat us because we were off guard and we weren’t ready.

“We’re ready this time.”

Liufau said, “We know how they play now, and we know what we need to do. Step it up, and win this time, and we’re going to.”
