Home openers for Falcon basketball teams

Cerritos College basketball fans can see their teams in action Wednesday as the men’s and women’s teams, both coming off last-second wins, play their home openers.

The women’s basketball team will host Cypress College at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game against College of the Canyons at 7:30 p.m.

Women defeat Moorpark

After finishing third in the San Diego Mesa Tournament, the Lady Falcons (3-1), ranked fifth in the state, visited Moorpark College Thursday and came away with a 64-63 win.

Four Falcons scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Jennifer Decuir with 23 points, including two clutch free throws to win the game.

Forward Antares Vice scored 11 points, and Chrystle Johnson and Marci Wong (with 12 assists) added 10 each.

Guard Emily Osongco, from last season’s squad, and Tiffany Amete, from the Cerritos volleyball team, made their season debuts in the Moorpark game.

Freshman guard Lauren Decoud injured her knee in the semi-final loss to L.A. Valley in the San Diego tournament and is out for the season.

Men’s team wins rematch with Long Beach

The Falcon men (3-3) played rival Long Beach City College for third place for the second weekend in a row, winning 56-55 Saturday in the Bill Mulligan Classic at Irvine Valley College and avenging a 74-68 overtime loss to the Vikings in the Saddleback Tournament.

Forward Antoine Smith, who scored 10 points in the game, made the winning basket as time ran out.

Guard James Perkins led Cerritos with 17 points, along with nine rebounds and three assists.

Forward Aaron Hamilton added 11 points for Cerritos, with six boards and four steals.

In the first round of the Irvine tournament Thursday, the Falcons beat Riverside, ranked fourth in the state entering the game, 79-71 in overtime.

Several players had great all-around performances for Cerritos.

Perkins scored 16 points with six rebounds and four assists. Hamilton had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and DeJuan Wilson added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Guard Curtis Williams added 15 points and 10 boards.

The Falcons then lost to Mt. San Jacinto, 64-55, in the semi-final round.

Freshman point guard Ryan Reyes led Cerritos with 15 points.

Williams broke a bone in his hand in the game and is out indefinitely.
